Climate Action - Exploring Potential Solutions
The Province of British Columbia is committed to its great goal of leading the world in sustainable environmental management. As Premier Campbell announced through the 2007 Speech from the Throne, a key element of this commitment is to reduce British Columbia’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 33 per cent below current levels by 2020.
Achieving this target will require a multi-faceted strategy involving every ministry of government. From Ministry of Finance’s perspective, the Province’s tax system can serve as an important tool to help British Columbia achieve its ambitious climate action target.
|
For example, the Province currently provides tax incentives to encourage the purchase of hybrid vehicles, the production of wind power, and the use of bio-fuel. As we move through this year, working with the Climate Action Team, we want to consider additional ways of encouraging British Columbians to make environmentally responsible choices while maintaining a strong and competitive tax system.
I invite you to participate in the Province ’s broad climate action initiative. The Ministry of Finance is pleased to receive your ideas, comments or suggestions for fiscal or tax proposals; please write, fax or email to:
I also encourage you to forward this invitation to any other person who may be interested in providing input. All suggestions will be considered as we prepare for the 2008 provincial budget.
British Columbia is rising to an ambitious and important challenge that will require changes in the way we think about our environment and how we live our lives. I hope you will participate in this opportunity to make a difference on climate change.
